“Windows” (2023) - Rachel Sumner
I am thankful for the blinding snow
For the land that it lands on
For the pause it demands of all of us
City life is bright and rarely slow
But her streets will hush themselves
Once the rush upon the shelves
Clearing corner stores of milk and bread is done
Oh, I love a winter storm
And the snowy banks that form
On my window, where I watch the landscape changing
I am thankful for the waning moon
For she teaches how to rest
As she lessens to a crescent, growing dim
There's an eerie lightness when we're new:
Untethered and untied
But like the moon we find
Time and course will fill us up once more
Oh, I love to greet the night
Knowing it's an ancient site
Oh, our window to the past is always changing
I am thankful for this heavy heart
For the way it weighs me down
Fastened firmly to the ground
I'm alive and I am here to feel it all
Oh, I love to make my home
I’ll make most any place a home:
Throw the windows wide, and watch the light keep changing
